Beginnings

In discovering blockchain we have all embarked on our own journey. The field has captured people from all walks of life: finance, computer science, venture capital, academia, and in the case of the Trust Machines film makers, high-tech marketing, journalism and film production.   The story of the film began in June 2017 when, at the ConsenSys Ethereal Summit, the Iris Mediaworks team found itself without an interviewer. Arthur Falls, director of media at ConsenSys and podcaster-in-residence also turned up at the event with film making ambitions of his own. His entry-level DSLR looking decidedly amateur next to the professional film, audio and lighting crew, he jumped into the folding chair and just started asking questions. The working chemistry was excellent, and by the end of the day the plan to produce a feature film had been hatched. Lexi Mills, a renowned high-tech marketer, PR and SEO specialist was also in attendance and saw an opportunity to experiment in a unique, emerging space. With her help a plan to crowd-fund and crowd-launch the film was developed.   Noah Workman, co-founder of Iris Mediaworks ideated a token-access-control distribution model with help from ConsenSys. As this was happening, Arthur circumnavigated the globe filming for a series of mini-documentaries and conducting pilot interviews for the feature film. Come late October and a new round of global events were to be held: Ethereal in San Francisco, Devcon 3 in Cancun, and the Global Fintech Festival in Singapore. This put the team back on the road. It was time to raise initial funds, and get moving.

What is trust? The belief you can reliably predict how something will act and react in the future.   We learn to build trust through observation, experience… our gut. But we don’t have time to establish trust with everyone…   So we manufacture trust. We use tools like Contracts, committees, currencies, rules, laws and votes to Build governments, banks and business. We trust these centralized intermediaries... so we don’t have to trust everyone.   This in turn has allowed us to simplify complexity and accomplish great things.   But what would happen if the tools we relied on to manufacture trust… stopped working? What if we tried to fix the intermediaries..  but instead of getting better we kept having the same problems... To change things we would have manufacture trust in a different way… This trust machine...  would be hard to imagine…  but if it worked we could trust everyone and every interaction... In a way we never had before.. And if it did work what would happen next would be totally different than anything we have seen before..   Soon we would see money without banks or governments. New businesses would be formed addressing the most pressing problems and the most profitable. New millionaires and billionaires would be created and new companies would materializing from seemingly nowhere.. to change everything... Does it work? Trust Machines.earth

What is trust?

The belief you can reliably predict how something will act and react in the future.

We learn to build trust through observation, experience… our gut.

But we don’t have time to establish trust with everyone…

So we manufacture trust.

To change things we would have manufacture trust in a different way…

This trust machine...  would be hard to imagine…  but if it worked we could trust everyone and every interaction...
